In an attempt to channel the energy of the youth into healthy and positive channels, the Muslim Assembly has encouraged the community to make use of its R1,5-million youth camp complex in Camp Drive, Strandfontein.
The first phase of the complex which was completed four years ago, is an extension of the community-based organisation’s education programme. The Muslim Assembly, which has great support from local and national donors, has been lending a helping hand to uplift Muslims and the broader public since 1967 in the Western Cape.
Moosa Vallie Ismail, the Assembly’s Executive Director said the organisation strongly believes in sharing its expertise by also helping other organisations with regards to youth development. “It is only by enlightening people, that communities will be truly liberated from all kinds of slavery. We teach youngsters how to deal with reality, teach lifeskills in Islam, understanding the belief system and practising that belief system that must come from an inner conviction. We also teach them the importance of tolerance, selflessness and to uphold the dignity of all human beings. Part of the education process is also to make the youth understand that there is freedom in making choices, but there is no freedom in the consequences that result from the choice one makes; in other words what you sow you shall reap”.
The Muslim Assembly’s vision is for the complex to become
a facility bustling with regular activities such as seminars, conferences,
youth camps, cultural functions and workshops not only for Muslims but
for the whole community.
The facility boasts a girl’s dormitory, a boys’ dormitory,
large kitchen, offices, ablution facilities and a hall (600 people). The
complex - just one of many projects the Assembly is involved in – is being
developed in phases as money becomes available. Plans are underfoot to
develop the land surrounding the main building into a sportsfield with
changing rooms, chalets and bungalows for hire, additional parking and
a recreational area.
